Been there done that, I can scratch ‘meet Jacques Fresco and The Venus Project’ off my bucket list.

I have been a fan of the Venus Project for 5 years now. Maybe you’ve heard of it, maybe not. In short, Jacques Fresco is a visionair. He is a technical engineer and a behaviour specialist and he created from these point of views complete blueprints of a ‘new world’. He called his philosophy Resource Based Economy and the blueprints he created are from buildings and complete cities, based on this philosophy. Important to know is that it’s not about the technical aspects (even though it’s really impressive), but it’s all about the social changes he wants to achieve. The technique should serve this purpose.

In these five years that I’ve been a fan, I really wanted to meet Jacques Fresco in real life. A couple of weeks ago I thought about it again and I sent them an email with the question if this is possible. Apparently it is quite easy, Jacques gives a seminar and tour at his Research Center in Venus (Florida) every Saturday. The only thing to do is to let them know that you want to join in. Their advice was to come quick because they couldn’t guarantee me that he can do this for a long time, because he is 100 (!!) years old. It didn’t take much time for me to decide to go for it real quick. (My colleagues thought this was the best reason they have ever heard from a colleague to go on a vacation, because of a 100 year old man…). So last June the 25th they were welcoming me at The Venus Project.
When I arrived, there were already about 10 other people waiting next to the parked cars, we weren’t allowed to take a walk there because of the alligators. This one was next to my car…
That was the whole group so it felt like a private session, very cool! Inside a fascinating building, Jacques was already sitting on a couch waiting for us to join. And as you can see on the picture, this man is really old. His best quote of the day was: Once when I spoke with Einstein(!). 
At that moment you realize that he really has seen and lived everything. After his lecture we were given a tour of the grounds of the Research Center. There are different kind of buildings they built themselves with their hands, all based on the pilosophy. After the tour we went back to the place where we left Jacques (he doesn’t do the tours himself anymore, he broke his leg when he was 96 and although he learned to walk again, the tour is too much for him. Well I forgive him 😉 ) Around 5PM Jacques was done with the seminar and we were given a moment to take pictures with him. Always nice to have as evidence!
Now that I’m back, people ask me what I learned from him. I concluded that I received a lot of confirmation about the way I think of life and the world around us, but from another angle. And that made it really interesting. One thing I liked was that Jacques told us that every innovation starts with exposure within nature. Nothing (really nothing) is conceived by people’s mind, it’s been given to us through a situation which happens in nature. So he agreed with me when I concluded that serendipity plays the most important role in development and growth. That means that the Serendipity Machine of Seats2meet proves its relevance now. To hear that Jacques confirms this, was realy something I didn’t want to miss.

Check en gedaan! Ik kan het ontmoeten van Jacques Fresco en zijn Venus Project van mijn wensenlijstje strepen…
Sinds 5 jaar ben ik al fan van de Venus Project, wellicht ken je het, misschien ook niet. In het kort, Jacques Fresco is een visionair. Hij is technisch ingenieur en gedrag specialist en vanuit die twee invalshoeken heeft hij complete blauwdrukken gemaakt voor een ‘nieuwe wereld’. Zijn visie noemt hij de Resource Based Economy en de blauwdrukken die hij heeft gemaakt zijn gebouwen en complete steden vanuit die visie. Daarbij een kleine noot, het gaat hem niet om de technologie, maar puur om de sociale veranderingen. De techniek moet daar dienend aan zijn.

In die 5 jaar dat ik fan ben, heb ik al op mijn wensenlijstje staan om Jacques Fresco een keer te ontmoeten. Een paar weken geleden dacht ik daar weer aan en heb ik de Venus Project gewoon maar eens een mail gestuurd, met de vraag of daar een mogelijkheid toe is. Het blijkt dus dat Jacques op zijn Research Center in Venus (Florida) iedere zaterdag een seminar en rondleiding geeft. Daar kan je je zelf zo voor opgeven via de mail, ze adviseerden mij wel om snel te komen, want er is geen garantie dat hij dit nog lang doet, gezien hij dit jaar 100(!!) is geworden. Ik had weinig nodig om de beslissing te nemen om asap die kant op te gaan voor een seminar en tour op zijn Research Center. (Mijn collega’s vonden het wel het beste argument dat ze ooit hadden gehoord om vakantie op te nemen, een 100 jarige man…) Dus afgelopen 25 juni was ik van harte welkom bij The Venus Project.
Daar aangekomen stonden we met 10 mensen te wachten bij de auto’s (we mochten niet zelf over het landgoed rondlopen aangezien ze daar alligators hebben. Dat was de hele groep, dus zou een mooie privé-achtige sessie worden. Binnen zat Jacques al te wachten op een bank en zoals je op de foto wel kunt zien, die man is echt oud. Zijn beste quote van de dag was: ‘want toen ik Einstein(!) sprak…’, dan besef je dat deze man echt alles gezien en geleefd heeft. Na een lezing van hem kregen we een rondleiding over het landgoed waar verschillende kleine gebouwen staan die ze zelf met de hand hebben gebouwd en voldoen aan de visie. Vervolgens gingen we binnen weer verder met Jacques (hij doet niet meer mee aan de rondleiding, hij heeft op zijn 96ste zijn been gebroken en heeft wel weer leren lopen, maar de rondleiding lukt hem niet meer, tja het is hem vergeven 😉 ). Rond 5 uur was Jacques er wel klaar mee en kregen we de mogelijkheid om met hem op de foto te gaan. Altijd leuk!
Mensen vragen me: en wat heb je van hem geleerd, wat neem je mee terug? Daarin kan ik eigenlijk vooral concluderen dat ik veelal bevestiging heb gekregen van hoe ik naar de wereld kijk, maar dan weer vanuit nieuwe invalshoeken benaderd en dat maakte het erg interessant. Wat mooi was, was dat Jacques aangeeft dat alle innovaties, ontstaan door exposure in de natuur. Niets, maar dan ook niets wordt door mensen zelf bedacht, het wordt ons gegeven door iets wat in de natuur gebeurt. Dus hij was het met mij eens dat serendipiteit het belangrijkste is in ontwikkeling en groei. Dus de Serendipity Machine van Seats2meet bewijst weer eens zijn relevantie. Heerlijk zulke bevestigingen en in dit geval van niemand minder dan Jacques Fresco.
